Rosewood uPVC Combination Casement Window — Warm Woodgrain Character, Intelligent Multilevel Ventilation

There are window configurations that simply open — and there are window configurations that think carefully about where ventilation should enter, at what height, and how the view should be preserved around it. Our Rosewood uPVC Combination Casement Window belongs firmly in the second category. Combining a top-hung opening vent at the upper left, a clean fixed lower left pane, and a full-height side-hung casement on the right — all finished in the rich, deep woodgrain tone of Rosewood — this three-light design delivers sophisticated multilevel ventilation and a generous unobstructed view in a frame that brings genuine warmth and character to any elevation.

Rosewood is the most popular woodgrain uPVC finish in the UK — and for good reason. The deep, warm brown of Rosewood adds the visual richness of traditional timber joinery to a frame that will never rot, never warp, never need painting, and will perform at A-rated thermal standard for the full lifetime of the window. This is the combination that the best of both worlds looks like in practice.

Left Section — Overhead Vent and Fixed View

The left-hand section of this double glazed uPVC window divides into two zones at mid-height, each serving a distinct and independent function within the overall ventilation and light strategy of the window.

At the upper left, the top-hung vent opens outward from its top edge, creating a ventilation gap at the head of the left section through which warm stale air rises and exits at ceiling level. The top-hung opening mechanism is inherently rain-resistant — the back face of the open sash deflects rainfall away from the gap — making this vent suitable for continuous operation in all but the most severe weather. It can be left open overnight, through a working day, or during and after cooking without concern about water ingress or draughts at occupant level. The airflow it delivers is gentle, directed upward, and consistent — the kind of background ventilation that maintains air quality without requiring attention.

Below the horizontal rail in the lower left section, the fixed pane delivers a clean view at seated and standing eye level without any hardware interrupting the glazed area. No handle, no hinge, no opening mechanism competes with the view through the lower left section — just clear A-rated double glazing in a rich Rosewood border, framing the outdoor space at the height where it is most directly experienced.

The combination of active upper left and passive lower left gives the left section a quiet compositional logic — ventilation at the top, view at the bottom, the horizontal rail between them making the division clear and proportional.

Right Section — Full-Height Opening

The full-height side-hung casement on the right is the most powerful ventilation element in this window — a sash that spans the complete height of the right section from sill to head without any horizontal restriction. When it swings fully outward on its right-hand hinge, it creates a ventilation aperture of exceptional height — air can enter and exit at every level from floor to ceiling simultaneously, creating the kind of full-column airflow that no partial-height casement can replicate.

For rooms where heat accumulates at ceiling level during cooking or heating, this full-height right casement removes that warmth from the full height of the right side simultaneously — drawing in cool fresh air at the lower level while allowing warm air to exit at the upper level through the same wide opening. For rooms with higher ceilings, or open-plan spaces where stratification of warm and cool air creates comfort problems, this full-height ventilation capability addresses the issue at the root rather than extracting air only from the lower or middle height zones where partial-height casements operate.

The casement operates completely independently of the top-hung vent on the left. Both can be used together for the most powerful ventilation the window offers — overhead extraction on the left combined with full-height inflow on the right, creating a diagonal cross-ventilation pattern that moves air across the full height and width of the room simultaneously. Or each can be used alone, according to the specific ventilation requirement at any moment.

The casement is secured with a multi-point locking system and a lockable push-button handle as standard, providing robust resistance to forced entry across the full height of the opening edge.

Why Rosewood Makes the Difference

The Rosewood woodgrain finish transforms this combination casement from a practical, well-specified window into a genuine design feature of the elevation it occupies. The deep, rich brown of Rosewood has a warmth and depth that white uPVC cannot approximate — it sits against brick, stone, and render with the confidence of traditional timber joinery, adding heritage character and visual interest to the elevation without the maintenance burden that real timber demands.

On a combination window with a top-hung vent, a fixed pane, and a full-height casement, the Rosewood frame gives each of the three lights its own clearly defined border in a consistent warm tone that ties the active and passive sections together into a single cohesive design. The horizontal rail between the upper vent and the fixed lower left pane is given the same rich Rosewood profile detail as the outer border and the central mullion — making the frame read as a considered, unified composition rather than an assembly of functional components.

Rosewood is the most natural-looking of the woodgrain uPVC finishes — the grain pattern within the finish adds texture and depth that catches the light differently at different times of day, giving the frame a visual dynamism that the uniform surface of painted or plain uPVC cannot achieve. From close up, the woodgrain detail reads as genuine quality. From the street, the deep warm tone gives the elevation an immediate character that increases the perceived value of the property.

The Rosewood finish on our Rosewood uPVC windows is a factory-applied woodgrain foil co-extruded with the uPVC profile — it will not peel, fade, crack, or lift away from the frame surface under any weather or UV exposure conditions. The profile carries a full 10-year guarantee against discolouration, warping, and deterioration. Maintenance is limited to an occasional wipe with a damp cloth — no sanding, no priming, no painting, and no recoating ever required.

Thermal Performance Across All Three Panes

All three panes in this window are built to the same A-rated thermal specification. The 70mm multi-chamber uPVC frame, 28mm argon-filled sealed units, soft coat low-E glass, and warm-edge black superspacer bar deliver a U-value of 1.3 W/m²K consistently across the top-hung vent, the fixed lower left pane, and the full-height right casement — meeting Part L Building Regulations throughout and delivering genuine, sustained reductions in heat loss in everyday use.

The horizontal rail between the top vent and the fixed lower pane is manufactured from the same 70mm multi-chamber profile as the outer frame, maintaining sealed air chamber thermal resistance at this internal element and preventing the cold bridge and condensation strip that develop at mid-frame rails in lesser profiles. The meeting stile between the full-height casement and the fixed frame to its left maintains the same thermal performance at the sash-to-frame junction as the fixed sections on both sides.

Security on Both Opening Lights

The top-hung vent is secured with a multi-point locking system and a lockable push-button handle. The full-height right casement is independently secured with its own multi-point locking system engaging at multiple points along the full height of the opening edge — from top to bottom — with a lockable push-button handle as standard. All three panes are retained throughout by internal glazing beads, preventing glass removal from the exterior. Patented double-action bubble gaskets run the full perimeter of both opening lights.

The Warmth of Timber, the Performance of Modern uPVC

Rosewood brings something to a combination casement window that no other uPVC finish can — the deep, warm, natural-looking character of traditional timber joinery, without a single hour of the maintenance that timber demands. The top-hung vent, the fixed lower pane, and the full-height casement all work exactly as the room needs them to — independently, reliably, and in all weathers. And the Rosewood frame ties all three functions together with the warmth, depth, and visual quality that make this one of the most characterful and most practically intelligent designs in our entire Rosewood uPVC window range.
